Training about something as simple as a coupon?

At first, couponing doesn’t sound like something that needs a lot of training does it?

After all, how complicated can it be? Scan a coupon at Point-of-Sale and then return it to the coupon issuer. But if there’s one thing that Valassis has learnt over the last 30 years, it’s that if something can go wrong it will. Coupons can be fiddly to deal with and require a level of vigilance people often don’t realise.

Problems with coupons arise 99 out of 100 times because of human error. For example:
  • No-one knows what to do with the coupon once it’s been redeemed
  • The goods specified on the coupon are not stocked by the retailer
  • The coupon has been forged or tampered with but is accepted
  • Staff don’t understand the T&Cs when challenged by the consumer

Manufacturers are being increasingly careful to check that retailers both list the products on the coupons they claim for and are within the geographical area being targeted by the promotional campaign. If either of these criteria are not fulfilled, they will not pay leaving you potentially out of pocket.

That’s an awkward and embarrassing conversation for a coupon issuer and retailer to have.
