Sifting through rocks to find gems

It’s surprising how many new ideas emerge every week that could be useful for the coupon world if adapted. Our task is to sort through all of these ideas and identify the ones that will be major players in the coupon market. That way our customers can invest in new technology without fear of obsolescence.

As you might expect, Valassis has some good leads, but we’re keeping the finer points under wraps for now. What we can say is this: we’re on the cutting edge of coupon development and technology in the UK with ideas like:

Coupons and loyalty cards
Consumers download coupons from the Internet and ‘load’ them onto a loyalty card. The coupons are then scanned and deleted (killed) when redeemed at Point-of-Sale.

Coupon code database
Every coupon code in the UK - paper or digital - is uploaded to retailers’ till systems. If a coupon scans that has been used before it is rejected, if not it is accepted, validated and deleted to reduce the possibility of duplication. Currently trialling this with a major UK retailer.

Additional functionality on till systems
Currently in negotiations with till manufacturers to add coupon database functionality as standard so that equipment can be updated with the information needed to validate and delete coupons at Point-of-Sale. At the moment this type of functionality is a bespoke requirement - only when retailers change their till systems can it be built in, and even then it has to be specifically requested.
