Just to round off….

Even though this website is comprehensive, we accept there’s always the odd question we haven’t covered.

If you have a question you can’t find the answer to within the site, check here first. If it’s not here, give us a call on 01536 400123.

1. How can I budget the cost of my campaign?

As a rough rule of thumb, allow between 6-10% of your budget against the Face Value of the coupons you plan to distribute. The rest of the costs are dependent on many factors (read coupon fundamentals). Remember to also include an allowance to cover retailer handling charges and our service fees.

2. How do I produce a retailer-specific barcode?

Place the retailer’s barcode on the coupon instead of your own. The contact details for the major retailers are below. Always state on the coupon that it must be redeemed at a specific retailer and put the retailer’s logo on there too. Please ensure the retailer has given you permission to do this.

3. What is a Valassis code and where do I get one from?

The Valassis code is a 9 digit code – quite separate from the normal 13 digit barcode on coupons – that is made up of your 4-digit contracted account number and a 5 digit code unique to each campaign. It’s how we identify your account details with every processed coupon that’s sent back from retailers. We’ll provide you with a Valassis code list to use for your company. Once all the codes have been used, call the Valassis Masterfile team on 01536 400123 or email masterfile@Valassis.co.uk to get a new one.

4. What if I produce a generic code but one of the major retailers does not stock the product?

Let us know about your stockists/non-stockists so if we receive coupons from non-stockists they can be returned unpaid to the retailer. Please note that a small surcharge will be applied to cover the administration of production staff referring to a non-stockists list.

5. How do I produce a Euro barcode for the Republic of Ireland?

Euro barcodes can be purchased separately from GS1/UK. They work slightly differently to their UK counterparts but the principles remain the same. Each barcode is 13 digits long, but start with 981 or 982 (instead of 99) and only allow 99 campaigns (instead of 999).

6. Can I keep my coupon after Valassis has processed it?

You certainly can! Just tell us at the coupon authorisation stage if you would like to keep the coupons and we will store and send them to you. There are additional charges for keeping a coupon which vary depending on whether the coupons are to be kept and stored at Valassis, data captured or forwarded to a third party.

7. My coupon count on the invoice varies from the face value charged?

This is usually because Tesco has already ‘direct deducted’ your trading account. Tesco send the coupon redemption data to Valassis to include within your marketing report, hence the coupon count will be higher than the actual face value charged.

8. How does Tesco direct deducting work?

Tesco produce a statement for you detailing the monies they have deducted from your trading account or, if you do not have a trading account, an invoice is sent direct to you for the coupons scanned. These coupons are then destroyed by Tesco and the data forwarded to Valassisfor inclusion within reports Manufacturers. The face value is of course NOT charged again.
