Valassis recognises that many of its activities leave a carbon footprint. We aim to reduce this carbon impact through a programme of continuous improvement.
Our carbon management policy has 6 key elements:
1. Quantify and monitor the carbon footprint of our business and set specific reduction targets.
2. Meet or exceed our energy reduction targets through reduction programmes and ongoing cost
effective investments.
3. Integrate carbon management objectives into relevant business decisions.
4. Require all colleagues to address carbon management responsibilities within their daily work.
5. Influence suppliers of services to reduce their carbon footprint.
6. Publish information on our carbon management performance.
Our commitment to reduce our Carbon impact is outlined below:
- Our carbon footprint in 2010 was 184 tonnes of CO2 from our main energy usage in our head office and small warehouse in Corby.
- We are constantly seeking ways to reduce this e.g. in 2010 Valassis invested in server virtualisation delivering a reduction of 50% energy usage for servers.
- Outsourcing our operations to Poland in 2008 led to an overall energy usage reduction of 5%*.
- Smaller fit-for-purpose premises in UK and Poland,
- Investing in latest energy reduction technology e.g. lighting sensors in Poland.
- To demonstrate Valassis’ commitment to ongoing carbon reduction our aim is to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard during 2011.
- Our 2011 carbon reduction programmes include:
- Removing unnecessary light bulbs, putting copiers and laser printers on timers;
- Increasing insulation in head office;
- Energy monitoring to reduce off-peak heating costs.
