The European business is on the cusp of a major shift in commercial focus. The core business is stable and profitable (couponing) and the emphasis is now on adapting and integrating digital products offered in the US across Europe.

Digital Space

Digital coupons are predicted to show dramatic growth in next 5 years. 200m mobile phone users will be redeeming coupons worldwide by 2013. The IPhone has seen an exponential growth outpacing any other mobile Internet device worldwide. Through the enabling technology, the average number of coupons redeemed per user will grow from 5 to 12 between 2008 and 2013.

Brand manufacturers and retailers are actively exploring how the opportunity which these new technologies present can be utilized to achieve their marketing objectives more efficiently and effective. A global task force is developing global standards for the purpose of using mobile phones at the point of sale for consumer information, process efficiency and mobile marketing and promotion purposes. In Europe, new alliances, market players and marketing concepts emerge to capitalize on the opportunity. Existing players in couponing space are gearing up to deliver digital coupon distribution and clearing concepts.

As the European leader in coupon clearing and leading promotional media company in the United States and Canada, Valassis is well positioned to deliver exiting new promotional concepts to its European client base and to conquer new markets in Europe.

Key Responsibilities

To support our growth in the digital arena in Europe we are recruiting a Knowledge Expert Digital.

The Knowledge Expert Digital will report to the Business Development Director Europe who is based in the UK.
The Knowledge Expert Digital is ideally UK based.
He/she will closely cooperate with other UK based key positions, the European and UK MD and the Technology Solutions Director Europe as well as the European General Managers of Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium. He/she will regularly be in touch with his/her US equivalent. The position involves (international) traveling occasionally but is predominantly desk-based.

Responsibilities:
  • Gathering market data in the mobile media, digital offer, and mobile promotional consumer application space on European level, covering various retail verticals, amongst which grocery, franchise food, other retail such as consumer electronics.
  • Monitoring of competitive landscape with focus on digital.
  • Investigating and understanding relevant technology on a conceptual and somewhat technical level, attending meetings with potential partners.
  • Creating a dynamic knowledge center where relevant data is systematically stored, analyzed (what is the impact of a new technology or solution provider on our business), transformed into meaningful information and contributed to international discussions.
  • Interpretation of such data and pro-active presentation of idea’s that can lead to new digital solutions.
  • Supporting the digital sales process:
  • Bespoke research in preparation of client meetings;
  • Presentment of research results in trend analysis, gap analysis, opportunities and threats.
  • Setting up and attending meetings with potential customers.
  • Support proposals and presentations.
Profile

Skills/Qualifications/Experience:
  • Graduate or academic equivalent (commercial engineer)
  • Strong analytical skills with highly logical and precise approach (rational, fact based)
  • 1 – 2 years experience in a research role, preferably in the digital space, preferably qualitative research
  • ‘European’ exposure/ international orientation
  • Highly organized, systematic and logical
  • Creative/innovative.
  • Languages skills would be an advantage (e.g.Spanish, French, German, Italian)
  • Keen to develop a research role further and connecting research skills to the business purpose
