OCTOBER 2007 VALASSIS TO RELOCATE CORBY JOBS TO POLAND
9th October, 2007 - Valassis UK has today announced its intention to relocate approximately 240 jobs from its Corby plant to a new site in Poland. The jobs affected will be mainly in its coupon processing operation. Jobs will begin to be relocated from mid-year 2008. Before then, an extensive consultation process will be undertaken with all those likely to be affected.
Commenting on this decision, Charles D'Oyly, Managing Director of Valassis UK, said:
"We have taken this decision to ensure the future competitiveness of Valassis in the UK, and, more easily contain future cost increases to our customers. In short, we are committed to preserving a quality service at an affordable cost.
Following wider trends in industry (1), and among our customers, Valassis UK has made the decision to relocate these jobs to Poland because it is a considerably lower cost location.
Naturally, we will do everything we possibly can to support our staff through this very difficult process. We have always been a concerned and highly responsible local employer and that's how we will continue to behave".
Leading international industrialist, Lord MacLaurin of Knebworth, (former Chairman of Vodafone plc) helped to put the decision into context by saying:
"All companies have to constantly review their levels of productivity, efficiency and competitiveness - it's an integral part of the strategic planning process. Valassis is no different from any other company in this respect and, indeed, they would be managerially negligent if they didn't do this. What is important however is that the process of relocating jobs abroad is handled sensitively and professionally and I'm sure they will do this".
